ARB - Arabic

ARB 101  Beginner Arabic I  (3 Credit Hours)  
This course introduces the study of literary and formal spoken Moroccan Arabic. The course is designed to develop simultaneously the fundamental skills: reading ability, aural comprehension, oral and written self-expression. Exercises in pronunciation, grammar, and reading are a regular part of the course. Particular focus is on the spoken word. This course is taught on the Tangier, Morocco campuses.

ARB 102  Beginner Arabic 2  (3 Credit Hours)  
Building from Beginner Arabic I, this course advances students’ A2-level proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic by building the skills needed to navigate simple, everyday communication with greater ease. Students broaden their vocabulary, strengthen essential grammar, and practice reading, listening, writing, and speaking through lively, real-world themes. Experiential activities such as guided conversations with native speakers, exploration of authentic media, and hands-on communication tasks encourage students to use the language actively and with growing confidence. By the end of the course, students can understand short, clear messages, ask and answer straightforward questions, describe familiar experiences and needs, and participate in brief, predictable interactions in Arabic.

ARB 201  Intermediate Arabic I  (3 Credit Hours)  
This course builds B1-level proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic by strengthening students’ ability to communicate in everyday situations. Students expand vocabulary, reinforce core grammar, and improve reading, listening, writing, and speaking through focused practice and culturally relevant themes. Experiential learning includes interactions with native speakers, visits to local sites, engagement with media, and practical communication tasks that support real-world language use. By the end of the course, students can manage routine conversations, describe experiences and events, express simple opinions, and understand the main points of clear, standard Arabic on familiar topics.

ARB 211  Intermediate Arabic  (3 Credit Hours)  
This course is advanced Arabic that builds on and reinforces reading and linguistic skills that were developed in Basic Arabic. Specifically, the course is designed to develop further the fundamental skills of reading ability, aural comprehension, oral and written self-expression that were introduced in ARB 101. Exercises in pronunciation, grammar, and reading are a regular part of the course. Particular focus is on the spoken word.

ARB 301  Advanced Arabic I  (3 Credit Hours)  
This more advanced Arabic course builds on and reinforces reading and linguistic skills that were developed in Arabic 101 and Arabic 201. Specifically, the course is designed to develop further the fundamental skills of reading ability, aural comprehension, oral and written self-expression that were introduced in ARB 101 and ARB 201. Exercises in pronunciation, grammar, and reading are a regular part of the course. Particular focus is on the spoken word.
