This course will examine public health principles and concepts. It will provide a broad framework for understanding public health's role in community health, prevention, and medicine. Using the five core public health knowledge areas and the ten essential public health services as a foundation, students will explore public health infrastructure, surveillance, social determinants of health, policy, environmental factors, and emerging issues.

This course explores the data-driven methodologies used for measuring factors underlying the distribution and determinants of health in communities. Emphasis will be placed on investigative techniques, epidemiological methodology, and critical thinking about epidemiological studies and data.

A person’s health is based on a range of factors including behaviors, genetics, clinical care, physical environment, and most significantly economic and social factors. This course is designed to introduce health profession students to key concepts related to the determinants of health. Students will explore concepts such as diversity, disparity and social determinants of health. They will be exposed to ways in which they can address and mitigate inequities and barriers to health. Lectures, readings, skill-building exercises, videos, discussion boards, self-reflection, and service learning will be used to illustrate critical knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for culturally responsive practice. Course readings and media reflect theories and practice models across disciplines and cultures.

This course introduces students to critical issues in international health emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach to understanding global health problems. Students will explore issues such as health inequalities, emerging health issues, and adapting public health approaches to address issues affecting various cultures.

This course explores major methodologies useful in public health research, including problem identification, hypothesis and question formulation, research designs, measurement types, sampling procedures, and qualitative and quantitative analysis.

The overall goal of the course is to provide students with the tools they need to discover underlying causes of health problems and create solutions that improve health among groups or populations. Specifically, the course will explore public health from an ecological perspective and will provide students with the opportunity to explore upstream determinants of health and illness. The course will present numerous conceptual frameworks, models, and theories to understand and intervene on health determinants. Students will use relevant literature along with local and state data to develop an evidence-based intervention strategy to address health problems of their choosing.

This course is designed to introduce undergraduate public health students to the principles and practices of health communication and social marketing. Students will learn how to design, implement, and evaluate communication strategies and social marketing campaigns that promote behavior change, improve health literacy, and address public health issues effectively.

This course examines the principles and practices of effective public health planning and evaluation. These approaches include utilization of public health theories, methods of evaluation, and strategies to promote health and public policy

This course covers the major components of health care delivery and the health policy making process and implementation. Topics include health care infrastructure and factors that drive the development of health policy in the United States. It will cover current challenges faced by the U.S. health care delivery system and how health policy, both historically and today, has sought to address these challenges. This system is compared with those of other nations to highlight its relative strengths and weaknesses. The course will explore health care concerns associated with population and public health, including how the behavior of individuals and groups influences health. Population health, health disparities and health equity issues will be reviewed. The course will explore the logistics of the health care system, including how it is organized, the healthcare workforce, health care financing, current issues in looking at value of health care and the transforming health care system.

The Public Health internship course is designed to provide practical experience and facilitate preparation for the workforce. Students will complete professional work in the field at an internship site secured through collaborative effort by the student and internship professor. In addition to the work done for the site, students will also be expected to complete course work related to the focus of their internship, likely including but not limited to weekly journals, a related paper, culminating project, and summative portfolio.

This course provides students with the skills to conduct a community health assessment to identify a community's health related priorities, strengths, and challenges. Models and tools for data gathering, analysis, and interpretation will be presented and practiced. Students will learn how to use the results of a health assessment for planning, action, and evaluation.
